A Dance with Dragons- A Song of Ice and Fire- George RR Martin

This is by far my favorite book in the series topping even the action packed A Storm of Swords. The Dragons are back and grown and wreaking havoc, that alone should entice you to crack this book open.

At roughly 1,012 pages making it the second largest in the series, it read considerably faster and smoother than any of the previous installments . For one, many of the popular characters are back and some loose ends got tied up, however Martin still allows this installment to end on a cliffhanger much like how he has done with all the books so far.

A Dance with Dragons is narrated from eighteen POV’s  (yup, a whopping 18) as follows;

In the North

  1. Prologue: Varamyr Sixskin.
  2. Jon Snow
  3. Bran Stark
  4. Davos seaworth
  5. Theon Greyjoy/Reek
  6. Asha Greyjoy
  7. Lady Melisandre

In the East/Essos

  1. Daenerys Targaryen
  2. Tyrion lannister
  3. Quentyn Martell
  4. Jon Connington-His identity as a narrator was kept secret throughout the book’s pre-release process.
  5. Ser Barristan Selmy
  6. Victarion Greyjoy
  7. arya Stark

In the South

  1. Areo Hotah
  2. Jaime Lannister
  3. Cersei Lannister
  4. Epilogue-Kevan Lannister-His identity as a narrator was kept secret throughout the book’s pre-release process.

The prose is still lengthy and some instances unnecessary and at times you feel as if you want to treat it like a cheap romance where you read the beginning, the middle and the end of the story.  Though Martin gets carried away sometimes with a not so important character, it is wise to stick with it while he does so since they may become important in the long run. It will most certainly saves you time to go back and reread something that you missed earlier on to tie it to the main event now.

Martin is yet to announce when the 6th book in the installment, The Winds of Winters will be released.  We can be hopeful that its sometime in 2014 but based on his track records I would say mid 2015 if we are lucky.

RATINGS: 8.8/10
