Divergent- Veronica Roth (Review done by Danielle D-Guest Young Adult Writer))

Divergent is about sixteen year old Tris Prior who lives in a dystopian world, a society divided by factions, Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). She has never really fit in with her faction, Abnegation which is confirmed when she goes through her Aptitude test to find out which faction bests suits her and which she could possibly devote the rest of her life to, but she is taken by surprise when she finds out her results gives her three options, making her Divergent and in danger of being killed.

divergent factions

Now that she has chosen Dauntless as her new home, abandoning her parents and her faction, Tris, alongside other initiates, must fight to show that they belong in Dauntless, undergoing many obstacles that test their strength, determination and endurance. As initiation changes everyone, including Tris, who becomes stronger, physically and mentally, she must figure out just who her allies and enemies are in order to survive.

I believe

…this book was well written as I was able to see just how much Tris’ character was able to develop over time and become stronger. The idea of such a society was refreshing and interesting. Also the romance and the action was just the right amount to keep a reader interested and on the edge of their seats to find out what is going to happen next. The supporting characters that comprised of Tris’ friends and love interest, Tobias, who is a leader within Dauntless and also one of the two persons in charge of dealing with initiates, were also really interesting and played an important part in Tris’ development and who she becomes by the end of the book, plus Tobias proves to be quite the eye candy. But despite having the gruesome initiation to deal with, she has to worry about the heads of the different factions finding out about her being divergent and unable to be controlled. One slip up and it might cost her, her life as she fights to stay alive and find out what evil scheme is being planned to disrupt the perfect society that she has known since she was born.
